Hip hop fans around the region will be pleased to hear that Los Angeles based hip hop independent label, Stones Throw Records have secured a deal with Malaysian independent label, Laguna Music, to distribute and market their albums around the South-East Asian region, making it easier and cheaper for Stones Throw fans to purchase their albums closer to home.
The label, started by DJ/Producer Chris ‘Peanut Butter Wolf’ Manak, is home to Madlib and many of his projects which include Madvillain, Jaylib, Yesterdays New Quintet, Quasimoto, and Lootpack. Other notable artists on the Stones Throw roster include Dam-Funk, Mayer Hawthorne, Guilty Simpson, Anika, Strong Arm Steady, Gary Wilson, DOOM, J Dilla, Aloe Blacc, J Rocc, Arabian Prince, Baron Zen, Koushik and James Pants.
Over the years, Stones Throw has built up a catalogue that includes some of the most critically acclaimed names in hip hop. Their philosophy about the music keeps the quality control high. Instead of chasing chart hits, Manak simply puts out records he likes and believes in.
Jeremy Little from Laguna Music quoted “It’s an exciting time for our company, for us to be able to work with an established label like Stones Throw Records brings us a step forward for Laguna Music to be recognised as an reputable distribution label. I was introduced to Stones Throw over 10 years ago when I first took up DJing in the early Prana days and now we’re able to have their albums distributed here in Malaysia.”
“We have recently acquired a bunch of their CD’s, Vinyl’s and merchandise that will be sold through our Laguna Music Store. We will also be speaking with our partners to have these albums made available in retail music stores around Malaysia as well as regionally in countries like Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong.”
